چکیده

The behaviour of simple liquids in the vicinity of the critical point is generally well understood. The relevant bulk quantities like compressibility, correlation length and density difference between the coexisting liquid and vapour phase are described by power laws, whose critical exponents are in close agreement with renormalization group calculations; relationships between these critical exponents are given by the scaling laws [ 1,2]. , The critical behaviour of the bulk materials is also reflected in the properties of the interface between the coexisting phases, in particular the interfacial tension o. At the critical temperature Tc, o has to vanish because the liquid and vapor phase become identical. One therefore expects a behaviour of the form

Surface Tension Prediction of n-Alkanes by a Modified Peng-Robinson Equation of State Using the Density Functional Theory

Through this study, the ability of a modified Peng-Robinson (MPR) equation of state in predicting the surface tension of n-alkanes based on the density functional theory approach was investigated and compared with other studies. The interfacial layer thickness and the density profile were calculated simultaneously at different temperatures from triple point to near critical point using the modi...

lntedacial Tension Near the Tricritical Point in 3He--4He Mixtures

The same relationship holds for the interfacial tension o-i at the consolute critical point (the critical point for phase separation) of a binary fluid mixture. Up to now no rigorous theory links the interfacial tension to properties of the bulk system. However, a phenomenological approach which should be valid in the vicinity of the critical point has been developed by Fisk and Widom. 2 Accord...

Lennard-Jones Energy Parameter for Pure Fluids from Scaled Particle Theory

By considering the fact that the surface tension of a real fluid arises from a combination of both repulsive and attractive forces between molecules, a new expression for the interfacial tension has been derived from scaled particle theory (SPT)  based on the work of cavity formation and the interaction energy between molecules. At the critical temperature, the interfacial tension between c...

The Surface Tension near Criticality of the 2d-ising Model

For the two dimensional Ising model, we construct the adequate surface tension near criticality. The latter quantity has been shown [9] to play a central role in the study of phase coexistence in a joint limit where the temperature approaches the critical point from below and simultaneously the size of the system increases fast enough.

Critical casimir effect and wetting by helium mixtures.

We have measured the contact angle of the interface of phase-separated 3He-4He mixtures against a sapphire window. We have found that this angle is finite and does not tend to zero when the temperature approaches T(t), the temperature of the tricritical point. On the contrary, it increases with temperature. This behavior is a remarkable exception to what is generally observed near critical poin...
